Funding and Grant Support

The Maine Trails Program Working Group

The Maine Trails Program (MTP) is currently the most robust and accessible funding program available for trails in the state. Created by the Maine Legislature in 2024 following overwhelming support from voters to fund a bond, the program is administered by the Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL) within the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry.

Our Maine Trails Program Working Group is the collaborative engine that steers MTC’s statewide grant support initiatives. Composed of regional trail advocates, club leaders, and policy experts, this volunteer team meets regularly to design educational resources, coordinate with state agencies, and manage our grassroots volunteer network. Note: If you are an applicant looking for direct grant resources or a mentor, please visit our MTP applicant support page! (Click here to visit the page: Maine Trails Program)

“The Maine Trails Program has been an incredibly valuable opportunity for our community. The application process was clear and supportive, and the program is helping us move forward with becoming a Trail Head for the Kennebec Valley Rail Trail system that will enhance outdoor recreation, improve accessibility, boost the local economy, and create a space that residents and visitors alike can enjoy.”
Kelly Pinney-Michaud, Town Manager, Oakland, ME - 2025 MTP Grant Recipient
